England might change bin collections in 2025. These changes could start as early as March. Labour criticized the current bin system, saying it’s confusing for English households. A previous plan suggested seven bins sometimes, but the current government proposes something different.

Most homes and workplaces will use four containers. These could be bags, bins, or stackable boxes, which the government calls a “maximum default”. Councils can adapt to suit local needs, hoping recycling rates will improve. Rates have been around 44% since 2015.

The government outlined a timeline for waste changes. Businesses must collect core recyclables by March 31, 2025, excluding garden waste for now. Glass, metal, plastic, paper, card, and food are included, but small firms get more time.

Micro-firms have until March 31, 2027, to arrange recycling. Local councils must collect core recyclables by March 31, 2026. Weekly food waste collections are required for most homes, and plastic film collections start by March 31, 2027.

Food and garden waste can be collected together. The policy says this won’t hurt recycling, and mixed waste can still be processed properly.
