Worries arise over the future of Coldharbour Adventure Play Centre after a review sparks fears of potential cuts.

The centre is free with trained staff. Some fear the review could mean cuts. The centre matters a lot to people nearby. Council papers mention new play area investments and also discuss youth programs run by others.
The council might change how the center operates. Now, it is open 30 hours weekly. They could find new locations for longer hours. They want it to be easier to reach. Some worry about removing staffed centers and unsupervised open areas that could cause problems.
Local families need safe, guided play options. The council plans to fix up some play sites and will also invest in surrounding areas. They intend to expand access to play spaces.
Matt Hartley said kids must be part of the review. He leads the Conservatives on the council. A committee supported his idea. Martin Sheehan started a petition about the centre.
It provides meals when school is out. It is a safe place where violence is a problem. Closing it would harm vulnerable children, and they would lose vital support they need.
The petition calls the center “a home.” It protects and nurtures many kids there. The center also provides food during breaks when others nearby are not a safer option. Moving kids in a dangerous area is risky.
Hartley said the play center is essential. He worries about what the review will mean. Families need clarity from the council soon because the council has not spoken to the kids yet.
The council should involve kids who use the center. Staff work hard and deserve to be involved. News Shopper contacted the council for more information.
