A mother was told she couldn’t breastfeed in a Greggs, sparking outrage and prompting an apology and investigation.

Staff suggested she use a public toilet instead. They also suggested a bench outside. They said it was Greggs’ policy. Rebecca felt the staff lacked empathy. She asked if eating in was okay. She needed to breastfeed her baby.
A male staff member said no. A female staff member also said no. Rebecca felt angry and avoided confrontation. She stopped wanting to breastfeed publicly after that.
The law protects breastfeeding in public places. Cafes and shops must allow breastfeeding. Rebecca went to M&S and breastfed there instead. M&S staff were very supportive.
Her mom shared the story online after hearing about it. Hundreds of people commented, offering their support. Managers at the Greggs store didn’t respond.
Greggs’ head office apologized to Rebecca. They admitted the staff were wrong. All branches will get a reminder about breastfeeding laws. The company started an investigation.
A protest was planned at Greggs. Breastfeeding mothers would support Rebecca. Greggs has not yet made a statement.
