A new path plan got East Lothian Council’s backing. They still need permission from the landowner. The path needs to cross their field. This issue started back in 2005. Early plans showed a safer route that would avoid the busy B1345 road.

Campaigners believe this path will save lives and make travel safer for everyone. People could choose greener ways to travel. This route would boost the area by connecting to East Lothian’s path network, which includes the John Muir Way.

The council leader spoke about this path on January 14, stating the council supports this travel route from Gullane to Drem station. However, they lack land to build the safe route they want because the landowner won’t sell.

Campaigners once thought they would succeed, but their hopes were later dashed. New support from the council might help. A path spokesperson said the council leader’s intent is important, as he wants a safe link from Drem to Gullane.

The council leader knows the plan has wide support that spans across the community, business sector, and political parties. The path would make travel greener and safer, also connecting to the existing path network. A cycling advocate called it a big step.

He said the campaign has gone on for twenty years, which highlights the need for a safe route. Residents, businesses, and government support it, and they hope all involved can make the path happen to help connect communities.

The path will improve green travel options, and they want to see the council turn this into reality. A “Ramblers Scotland” manager praised campaigners, who are working to improve the planned trail that links Gullane with Drem.

East Lothian Council’s backing is a good thing, but everyone should work together to solve issues. Scotland has good access rights for trails, and we need to focus on local paths. Better trails create happier, healthier communities where more can enjoy car-free time, thus East Lothian and other areas need more paths.
