Plan to convert a Halifax branch into a 24 hour adult gaming center faces opposition due to banking service concerns.

Hume said people need banking services to deposit and withdraw cash. Local businesses require this service too. The closure means traveling nineteen miles to Scarborough for banking.
Hume stated banks help high streets by providing vital services. Luxury Leisure said it helps town centers, diversifying options with a limited impact on retail.
Jacqueline Hoggart opposes the plan and mentions Whitby’s unique feel. She hopes the plan fails, viewing gambling promotion as dangerous.
Luxury Leisure has over 2,000 UK employees and responsibly runs many gaming centers. They say no noisy machines will attract kids and believe 24-hour access will aid the town.
Debbie Beeforth also objects, wanting retail businesses, not gaming centers. She feels the council should help banking services, as banks are important for the town.
Hume mentioned banking hubs in Parliament and reduced services. Whitby’s hub is open just one day a week, while the Halifax branch was open five.
Luxury Leisure and Novomatic did not comment. The council has yet to decide, and people can still comment on the application.
Malton’s Halifax closes April 8, 2025. A Community Banker will help customers afterward, with that assistance being offered by the company.
