People are asking the council to stop bus pass cuts. Some want to protect older and disabled riders. Charities and groups are also involved. They oppose Hampshire’s planned changes.

The council made a choice on October 14. They want to cut extra bus pass benefits because of money problems. The council expects a budget shortfall too.

Bus passes give discounts on public transport. Disabled people and pensioners use them. Hampshire offers free travel now within England for disabled pass holders. Companions of disabled users travel free too.

Free bus rides exist before 9:30 am currently on routes with limited service. But these extras will end on April 1. The council approved this change privately on November 19.

Next year’s budget is roughly £12.5 million. The full council must still approve it. Cutting extras saves bus companies money and would save around £75,000 each year.

Protesters will give a petition to the council before today’s meeting. That meeting happens February 13.
