Part of Bowers Way West car parking is shut due to safety concerns, affecting shoppers. Alternative spaces offered.

The district council told us a weakness exists in the car park’s structure. Edenrise Properties owns that building, so they’re responsible. Council officers are waiting to hear their plans for fixing it.
Helen Campbell talked about the parking problem, saying the issue was a surprise and totally unexpected. Sainsbury’s told the council about the problem. The council had to close the upper level for safety.
This news isn’t good for Harpenden, where parking is already hard. Campbell understands people will be annoyed, but it’s out of their control. The council doesn’t own the building and can’t maintain it.
The council parking team talked to Edenrise about next steps. They will update locals with any updates they receive. Season ticket holders can use Bowers Way East, with its 148 spots, without extra cost.
The council also runs two other car parks in Harpenden. Lydekker has extra spaces; it is owned by the town council, and Amenbury Lane is another alternate parking area.
