Hornchurch Fire Brigade began back in 1830. In July 1907, they opened a new station on Billet Lane near the Parish Council. Later, in 1965, they joined the London Fire Brigade.
Romford police started with Essex Constabulary in 1840. They were part of the Brentwood Division. The first photo features officers outside the new station; it’s from September 1894, says Havering Libraries. The second photo shows older uniforms.
Essex Constabulary changed from top hats to helmets. This photo is from the 1860s or 1870s.
The Rainham Parish Fire Brigade excelled in competitions. One event was the “four men hose cart drill”. The team earned a trophy at Grays. The photo likely dates to 1914. Their winning trophy went to Essex Fire Museum.
Romford got its Town Ambulance through donations in 1918. It began its service officially that October. This ambulance helped over 300 patients, providing care to military personnel and civilians. In 1920, they gave it to the council, and a photo captures this handover event.
