A woman from Rowledge feels heartbroken. Someone removed a hedge she planted long ago with her husband, years before.

The hedge grew beside the lane, linking Fullers Road and Kiln Equestrian Centre. Workers removed it with almost no warning in the last week of January. Neighbors tried to find the landowner, but they learned he didn’t break rules. The hedge sat on his private property.

The speed of removal shocked people. They received notices the same day as the work while machines were already there. This left residents feeling upset about the little notice, and they could not stop the work.

Monica Rodgers, who has lived on Fullers Road for 52 years, wanted to speak to the landowner. She asked about what was happening, but claims no one could help her. They told her that if she lacked contacts they could do nothing.

Learning about the removal as it unfolded upset her, and she said it was a matter of principle. The landowner said he was doing landscaping as workers have laid turf where the hedge used to be. Some worry about a possible new access road.

The EHDC considers that land a possible building site, and Cala Homes might buy it. Last September, Angela Macleod spoke to the Herald about a failed attempt to remove horses. The horses lived in a field near Kiln Equestrian Centre.
