Hengistbury Head’s outdoor center is getting a big update. The government may give them £650,000 soon, but they still need to find £200,000 to match it. The deal should finalize next week. A community group shared the news.

Hengistbury Head Outdoors will save the center, which fell into disrepair from a lack of funds. The center was built in the ’60s and used to teach water sports to many people. Now, only six groups use the docks.

The building became unsafe in 2020. HHO started in January and has 20 volunteers, who want to fix the popular building. BCP Council will lease it for 99 years. HHO awaits the grant to begin the work.

Demolishing and rebuilding cost a lot of money five years ago, around £4-5 million. So, HHO decided to repair and improve the center. HHO was picked for the government cash. Max Buttinger told everyone at the meeting they were selected alongside 80 other UK projects.

He said, “Last year was a dream. Now we’re at a turning point.” They must raise £200,000 by Christmas; otherwise, they lose the grant money. He asked for donations.

The Sharp family gave £60,000 because they enjoyed sailing at the center. The money will repair and renew the site, Bill Howlett mentioned. Mark Merritt said the work will happen in five stages and explained what they need to do.

“The money will make it great,” he said. “It will give it a good future.” Plans include a slipway and kitchen. They will repair classrooms and the sewage system.

They will add changing rooms and showers. The center should be ready for 50 years. The center will be a wellbeing place, focused on water and land activities.

The trustees want people to help raise awareness, and they also need funding. Becoming an HHO member costs £10. They plan a community share offer in April. The group needs tradesmen and professionals, too. A dragon boat team thanked the trustees. “The center is so important to us.” They appreciate dedications and enthusiasm.
