Locals fondly recall the Henley Road parade of shops, sharing memories and photos from Reading’s past.

Leese captioned his post, “The Parade of shops Henley Road Reading…” Almost one hundred people commented and shared memories of those old shops. Folks remembered Taylor’s Racing betting shop. Edwin Dent was a newsagent, someone said.
Another person mentioned the greengrocer shop, Paul’s. Someone recalled Dents newsagents and that their Nan lived on Anglefield Road. Others had similar memories of the shops and some even recalled working there.
Someone remembered the Wavy Line supermarket, as well as the butchers and cake shop. A bike shop was there too, also Edwin Dents. Another person delivered papers from Dent’s and bought stamps there for their savings.
Someone bought their lawnmower from the DIY shop. Sherry came in half-gallon bottles from the Hop Inn. Shops were great back then, they said. Another person remembered visiting Reeds with their mum for knitting supplies.
More people remembered those trips to the shops. Some also delivered papers for Dents. One person did a paper round from the newsagent. Another person’s mum lived nearby for thirty years.
Someone else lived near Chiltern Road and had happy memories of the area. Another person said you could walk safely then, without being afraid of traffic on the pavement.
