Hexham tackles cigarette litter with “Bin the Butt” campaign. Stencils remind people to bin butts, avoid fines, and keep streets clean.

Suzanne Fairless-Aitken said butts litter the new street. She says they get stuck in pavement cracks, making them hard to remove. Street sweepers often help.
Keep Britain Tidy launched “Bin Your Butts” in 2022. This campaign promotes proper disposal habits, with Hexham using stencils to join the campaign.
The group sprayed stencils on February 7. Northumberland County Council supports the effort. They identified problem areas around town, and the stencils say “Not a Bin for Butts.”
The sprays are temporary and will wash off in about a month. The group hopes to redo them for effect. They sprayed near the hospital and taxi ranks.
Suzanne thinks it’s a thoughtless habit. The signs remind people to stop and think. She asks people to use bins, and Wombles confirm their availability.
Dropping cigarette butts is an offense that carries a £150 fine. Many locals were happy to see action, and they want to keep streets clean.
Dominic Manuel thinks the effort is good, though he thinks litterers may not care. Charlotte Amy Percival thinks it’s worth trying, as she said litter is getting worse.
Wendy Fail manages waste. She says butts concern the environment and hopes people will use bins instead to avoid ground litter. She also reminded about fines for littering.
