Council says the region is too big, backing higher HGV limits but refusing car speed cuts after Transport Scotland review.

The consultation presents two options. One keeps speed limits as they are. The other lowers car speed limits by 10 mph and raises HGV limits by 10 mph. This applies to single and dual roads.
Officials had three reasons for their view. These reasons include the region’s size, driver behavior, and the economic impact.
The Council thinks any changes could hurt communities. It cited the region’s remoteness, potential increases in driver frustration, and possible difficulties faced by businesses. Supply chains could be affected too.
Chairman Ken Gowans does not support a reduction to 50 mph. He wants to keep the 60 mph limit but supports raising HGV limits. Single carriageway HGV limits would go to 50 mph, and dual carriageway limits would be 60 mph.
He thinks lower limits impact daily life and journey times could increase. Analysis may show journey times remain the same, but Gowans wants to see this analysis. Rural area data is especially needed.
Gowans said changes impact policing. A media campaign would be needed to inform people and explain the new speed limits.
