Group seeks £1,500 to light Holbeach beacon for VE Day. Celebrations planned to mark 80th anniversary.

The group is organizing the event at the beacon, which sits between Spalding Road and Wignal’s Gate. The Holbeach Beacon is a popular spot, often used for town celebrations.
The parish council plans celebrations elsewhere because safety concerns arose about the beacon’s location. However, the district council, who owns the beacon, stated that no safety issues exist.
Tony Topliss, the branch chairman, is asking people to help light the beacon, marking a truly important anniversary. The beacon sits near the Meridian line. Traditionally, Royal Observer Corps members light it.
After the Corps disbanded in 1991, the association carried on. The parish council usually sends them an invitation, but the council’s decision not to light it prompted action.
The Association asked the district council for permission and assistance in hosting the event, an event the community usually attends in large numbers. It is a tradition across the nation, and they feel it would disappoint the town if it didn’t happen.
The fundraiser covers costs such as insurance, toilets, and barriers. So far, they have raised £210 for the event, but the funds will also help provide musical entertainment, hoping to hire a band. Refreshments and games are also planned.
Festivities start at 8 pm, and the lighting happens at 9:30 pm. The event occurs at the beacon on May 8th. Any donation amount will help.
