A hospital allegedly used a random word generator to name a baby, creating issues for her father to get aid.
Jason is from Nebraska and calls his daughter Caroline. This started when he knew she was his child. Things seemed normal until he sought her birth certificate.
Caroline never had an official birth certificate. Hospitals use a “certificate of live birth” at birth. Her mom couldn’t care for her, so a friend took her to a hospital.
Jason wasn’t with the mom before the birth and didn’t know he fathered a child. She didn’t have parents present to name her. Hospital staff gave her “Unakite Thirteen Hotel.”
Jason contacted the hospital, CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs. They suggested a computer generated her name, and she is legally Miss Hotel in state records.
The authorities cared for the child before Jason learned of her. As her dad, he soon gained custody. He found she lacked a birth certificate, and this situation has caused problems.
Caroline can’t get key government aid, and Jason wants a Social Security card. This would help them get needed benefits, and he can’t get health insurance for her.
Jason also struggles to pay for childcare. He feels like Caroline is a ghost, and this situation has been very taxing. Medical bills present a huge issue.
A routine check-up cost Jason $700 because he has no health insurance coverage. Caroline had a fever and was throwing up, forcing Jason to consider his options for care.
He hates watching her suffer without health care and cannot enroll Caroline in daycare. Speech therapy is also out because services need a Social Security number.
It’s unclear how she lived over two years unidentified. Officials are investigating this mistake. Jason will keep fighting for his daughter and wants her legal name to be Caroline Elizabeth Kilburn.
