They started a fundraiser for the Hythe ferry. The ferry needs a new boarding platform, which will cost about £250,000. It connects Hythe and Southampton, but engineers deemed it unsafe last August, and it stopped running then.

Red Funnel bought the Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company in 2023. The Hythe and Southampton Ferry Company manages the route. They were formed shortly after the purchase, however, the ferry has been idle since February.

This company started a Crowdfunder page because people asked them to do it. The ferry is vital for locals as it supports the economy, tourism, and history. Losing it would hurt businesses and people.

The ferry has run since medieval times. It leaves from Hythe’s old pier, which has the oldest pier railway, making it a unique historical place.

They explored options but need a new platform, as there’s no council money available. They lack funds as an independent operator, even though a business plan exists for ferry sustainability. They need immediate support.

Donations or sponsorships greatly help secure the ferry’s future. They keep towns connected and boost businesses; every bit helps restart the service.

Ashleigh Mutimear spoke about the situation, noting that Red Funnel gives ongoing support, however, they haven’t confirmed platform repair funding yet. The ferry team takes a practical and strategic approach that aims for long-term sustainability.

The company is working on partnerships and wants support from businesses and councils. They contacted local councils and spoke to parish leaders. MPs from New Forest and Southampton heard from them, and Julian Lewis, MP, will meet with them.

They contacted many local businesses, too. Their goal is sponsorships or large gifts, so local authorities need to understand the ferry’s importance since the ferry helps the area and its residents.

Fundraising is beneficial but not the focus. They want long-term solutions that will keep the ferry running, which benefits residents, businesses, and visitors.

People have given over £1,300 online recently. One business donated £15,000 anonymously.
