Jaipur Spice in Thirsk fined for substituting sheep meat in ostrich curry. Boss blames temporary chef.

Abdul Malik Ali runs Amalik Café Ltd. Jaipur Spice is his takeaway. It’s in the Busby Stoop Inn. He pleaded guilty in court. The fine was £1,500.
Trading standards officers visited in December 2023. They tested the ostrich curry. The curry actually had sheep meat in it. Ali blamed a temporary chef. He claimed the chef used the wrong meat.
Food laws say food must be as advertised. Labels must tell the truth. They can’t mislead anyone. Trading Standards warned restaurants. Don’t lie, they said. Don’t use cheap meat swaps.
Councillor Greg White spoke about the case. He said food fraud is unacceptable. Customers deserve what they pay for. If you order ostrich, you get ostrich. Cheaper stuff is not okay.
Ali got a £237 fine himself. He must pay £400 in costs too. There’s also a £95 victim surcharge. Amalik Cafe Ltd got a £120 fine. They owe £672 in costs. A £48 victim surcharge also applies.
