New sports complex planned for Clifton includes padel, pickleball courts and a wellness center. Aims for fitness and recreation.

His plan includes four indoor padel courts and two indoor pickleball courts. A wellness center is also included. These racquet sports are gaining popularity. They mix tennis and squash elements, both using a net in the court’s center.
Padel boasts over 30 million players globally. These courts are smaller than tennis courts. Pickleball utilizes a badminton court size. Pickleball England promotes the sport, claiming 35,000 players in England.
The wellness center will have its own entry, a studio, and a cryo chamber. Plans also include saunas, treatment rooms, and a small creche.
The current inside space is 1,889 square meters. Plans will slightly change the inside design and add 164 square meters of space.
A reception area is planned, featuring a shop and equipment rentals. Changing areas and a cafe are also in the works. The cafe will offer snacks and drinks, with a viewing area planned above.
Car parking spots will increase, and six more cycle spaces will be added. The center will create new jobs and operate seven days a week, from 7 AM to 11 PM.
York currently has padel courts at the David Lloyd Club, located in the St. John’s Playing Field. Pickleball England lists local clubs at Haxby Road, Fulford School, York Stadium, and Copmanthorpe.
