Ipswich Borough Council considers a proposal to increase car parking fees by £307,000, aiming to boost revenue and cut traffic.

Jane Riley said the increase is key for the budget and supports climate change efforts. They plan to change rates at Crown Car Park; however, the full council must still approve this.
A one-hour stay would rise from £1.50 to £1.60, and a five-hour stay would go from £7.50 to £8. Current charges started in January 2023, approved in June of the prior year.
The council claims new prices are still lower than inflation. A 2011 one-hour rate of £1.70 equals £2.51 today, and the five-hour rate equals £11.09.
The £2.50 deal after 2 PM will rise to £2.70, and long-stay rates will also increase. Already higher than some private lots, these rates will now go from £7 to £7.50 for 24 hours.
Riley said this aims to cut town traffic and encourage greener travel. Yearly weekday tickets will increase by about £94, and annual all-week tickets go up around £99.
The new rates apply to Crown Car Park. A decision in October 2024 changed some rules, removing short-stay limits for 190 spaces there. This affects Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 6 PM.
Ian Fisher thinks prices should not rise now, feeling the town center is struggling. Neil MacDonald said they face tough choices, as finances are challenging for the town.
The council voted 8-1 for the changes. The full council must make the final decision next week.
