Tom Curphey spoke with students at Ramsey Grammar. He asked them about their plans after school and wanted to know if they’d stay on the island. He also asked what might make them stay.

Many young people leave the island after school, often going to universities far away. They don’t always come back to live here. Students shared their thoughts on this topic.

One student wants more local food in stores to support local producers, as big companies hurt them. Cheaper imports mean less support. Neglecting local producers harms the community.

Tom Hampton and Noah Quayle want more social events for young adults because nightlife declined, some say, leading to anti-social acts. More events could boost community ties and improve relations between generations.

Another student wants more nightlife if they return, feeling the island lacks clubs and venues. Young adults need places for weekend fun and more nightclubs could entice youngsters to stay.

One student plans to leave but would come back if housing was affordable and there was entertainment for all. They noted people judge youths without asking why.

Many students think there isn’t much to do, even though sports are available. They suggest more social clubs for young people, with winter spots to socialize, because the few options existing now feel too expensive.

Another student feels housing prices are too high, making it hard to move out of parents’ houses or even small apartments. High costs discourage returning to the island.

Olivia Bettridge wants more outdoor events, suggesting an adult Manx Youth Games, and thinks indoor facilities would help during winter. Arcades, mini golf, and skating rinks would be great, and outdoor theater and music festivals might unite people.

Isla Gray wants more outdoor music and plays. Another student says lacking fun makes youths leave, noting sports have options, but other entertainment is sparse. They suggest an affordable center like Summerland was.

Because most young people don’t plan a return trip from university, social spots island-wide, not just Douglas, might change minds. If they can do fun things, that increases interest, and the Isle of Man features a close community.

For years, folks discussed support for neurodivergent youth, a group that includes ADHD and autism. Diagnosis is slow, causing misunderstanding. This lack of needed support can then lead to mental disorders later on.

One student notes limited job options and wants bigger job fairs advertising island jobs, specifically jobs you don’t see in cities. This might make people stay.

Is the island accessible with fun activities on a budget? There are options but they may not be close, therefore, more fun events more often benefit everyone.
