Former Stratford District Council chief planning officer John Samouelle passed away at 90. Remembered for dedication and service.

He retired as the chief planning officer. The government rejected a new town plan then for Long Marston. John thought it would help housing and he was right, some think, as later they approved something similar.
He was proud of his career highlights. John’s team won a national award for the Bridgeway car park. The Duke of Gloucester gave the award.
Born in 1935, John then moved to Worcester and went to the King’s School. John served in the Royal Artillery later.
He became a chartered surveyor and also joined the planning institute. He worked for several county councils, including Worcestershire and Surrey. In 1974, he joined Stratford Council and became chief in 1988.
John married Sybil in 1959 and they had two daughters. Both daughters still live nearby. He loved traditional jazz music and enjoyed UK caravanning trips. Tennis was his big passion, and he played until his 70s. His wife joked about tennis.
After retiring in 1994, he did consulting and helped Cyprus with their planning. After returning, he enjoyed time with friends and also spent quality time with his family.
In 2022, doctors diagnosed dementia. His condition sadly got worse, and Sybil, his wife of 65 years, passed away earlier this year.
Mr. Samouelle died on January 15th. He leaves behind his two daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
His funeral is Friday, February 14th. It will be at Oakley Wood Crematorium, with the service starting at 2:30 pm.
