Five affordable homes may replace garages in New Earswick. Joseph Rowntree Trust is behind the project. Objections voiced.

The council wants all five homes to be affordable. Planners say the project has benefits because it uses land already developed for homes and adds landscaping and parking, removing the garages.
JRHT’s documents describe attractive new homes, aiming for a design fitting the village and complementing New Earswick’s style. The site is near older homes in New Earswick.
Grade II listed buildings are nearby, dating back to the village’s start around 1910. Each house will get one parking space, and JRHT will rent out the homes. Twenty-one trees must come down because their roots would be damaged by construction and are not compatible with the plan now.
Twenty letters objected to the plan. Concerns included harming listed buildings, losing mature trees, and suffering parking and green space. Some felt the plan was too cramped.
Most objectors live in New Earswick, and a councillor brought the plan before a committee. A resident noted the area’s historic value, and another felt it clashes with the Arts and Crafts style. The planning committee will meet on February 26.
