Judith Richardson passed away, after volunteering for 56 years with the RNLI at the Dungeness lifeboat station. Her service began when she was only 20.

In 2023, Judith received a British Empire Medal, recognizing her dedication to the RNLI. She initially started as a “lady launcher” for the group. These women were often wives or family who launched and recovered lifeboats in all weather, while the men were out at sea during rescues.

Vicky Morgan spoke about Judith’s strong dedication, noting that Judith completely embraced RNLI life and deeply cared for everyone she met there. She loved the station’s friendly atmosphere, and family was important at Dungeness RNLI for Judith; her commitment to the family never wavered.

Judith’s son, Stuart, shared the sad news that she died peacefully in her sleep and thanked people for their support. Many people posted tributes after her death, including local councilor David Wimble, who said she was loyal to her family and the RNLI.

Judith Richardson had been with Dungeness since 1967 and was said to be in her 70s when she passed away. In her first year, she immediately took on fundraising roles and also focused on water safety education, traveling with her husband, William, to take a water safety roadshow around.

Judith worked as the station’s press officer for several years and in 2022, she retired from those duties. She both told the media when the lifeboat launched and after, she worked in different station roles. King Charles honored Judith in June 2023.

She felt proud of her involvment with the RNLI and loved all of her experiences there, hoping to help save lives throughout her time. Lady Colgrain presented her medal in November. Judith’s husband was a coxswain at Dungeness, later becoming a local and county councilor, and he passed away in 2010 due to cancer.
