Kate heard funding requests at HMP Styal. She met inmates and saw the Action for Children supported mother and baby unit.

Women inmates shouted to her from the windows, saying, “We need more funding.” Kate smiled and greeted other inmates. These women leaned from a Portacabin’s windows.
The unit houses mothers with their babies. It also helps prisoners who are pregnant. The prison provides parenting support for women, with staff and experts helping in those first years.
The unit focuses on the bond between mother and child. Attachment is vital for the baby’s growth. This prison visit was Kate’s fifth in two weeks. Last year, doctors diagnosed Kate with cancer.
She has three children herself: George, Charlotte, and Louis. Kate champions early childhood development. Recently, she joined kids at the National Portrait Gallery. In November, Kate shared that her chemo finished. She now focuses on staying cancer-free.
