Filipe, 20, was stabbed April 15, 2023. DCI Kate Blackburn led the investigation. She sends thoughts to Filipe’s loved ones. They waited almost two years for justice.
The stabbing was unprovoked, Blackburn said. It happened outside Filipe’s home. The investigation used CCTV and witnesses. Haughton will stay in a hospital indefinitely. He may stay there for life.
He is no longer a risk to the public. Filipe Oliveira stood near his home on Norwood Road. Haughton approached him. CCTV caught Haughton approaching Filipe.
Haughton had a flick knife. He stabbed Filipe five times. Haughton then ran away. Officers got to Norwood Road around 6 pm. They tried CPR on Filipe.
He died later that night. Witnesses reported the stabbing. Detectives got tips via Crimestoppers anonymously. Haughton bragged about killing Oliveira. CCTV helped map Haughton’s route.
He traveled from Catford to Filipe’s home by train, bus, and foot. The trip took over an hour and a half. Police arrested Haughton at Waterloo Station five days later, on April 21.
The Met Police, Dorset Police, and Transport Police worked together. They did a joint manhunt.
