Lynn Mart opened today with a mix of old and new. Modern rides and a steam engine created the contrast. The rides were so advanced; they had tons of moves. Dignitaries marched for the historic opening. Cadets and showmen’s guild members joined them too.

The procession went to the Tuesday Market Place. Prayers happened, led by Rev Canon Dr Mark Dimond. Jo Rust read the proclamation aloud clearly. The Bishop of Lynn, Dr Jane Steen, gave a blessing.

Mayor Paul Bland declared the 818th Mart open. Preserving tradition seemed very important. He noted the Mart’s special meaning to the town. It also matters to showpeople, as its their season start.

The steam engine, Ex-Mayor, returned after 100 years. It marked its first Lynn Mart visit anniversary. Lawrence Appleton welcomed everyone warmly. He thanked people for their support of the event.

Appleton expressed his pride in the Ex-Mayor engine display. It arrived from Thetford the prior day, Thursday. That was the exact date it first got to Lynn Mart. Its restoration cost a quarter of a million.

The steam engine attracted admiration and attention. It heads to Leeds the following day after Lynn. Appleton recounted steam power usage for past rides. He noted the attractions and sideshow changes. He called it a modern fair with advanced rides.

Appleton joked the rides had “more moves than John Travolta.” The attractions’ dazzling display lit up at night. He said that it makes it a “wonderful sight.”

Appleton wanted the event to reflect modern trends. “Please come and visit your Mart,” he urged. A family Ferris wheel is a new addition this year. There’s also a new thrill-seeking ride for fun. The Mart is open Sunday.

The doors will be open from noon until 8 pm. Monday, February 17, is family day. The hours will be from noon to 9 pm. Saturday, February 22, is the final day. Then, the attractions move to nearby Wisbech.
