Fitzgerald Carty, 66, went to jail after trying to stab a man at a gas station on January 25. This incident occurred on Lee High Road, at a station located in Lewisham. Carty was sentenced on February 24.

PC Morgan Younger, from the South East Command Unit, stopped at the station for a drink. He witnessed Carty grabbing the victim’s throat and attempting to stab him. The officer has been a police officer for five years, and he acted fast.

Younger grabbed Carty, leading to a struggle where Carty still possessed the knife. Younger managed to get Carty on the floor, then took the knife away.

The officer restrained Carty alone and called for assistance. He then arrested Carty, holding him for five minutes until other officers arrived.

The man Carty attacked was in his 40s and thankfully remained unharmed during the incident. PC Younger, aged 23, stated that he acted quickly to stop a dangerous man, his training having kicked in. He expressed relief that the victim was safe.

Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry praised Younger for stopping a violent crime and remaining calm. Lawry believes the victim could have been seriously hurt.

Carty, who lived on Dacre Park in Lewisham, was arrested and charged on January 26 with knife possession and attempted harm. The attack stemmed from an earlier argument, and he knew the victim.

Carty admitted his guilt in Woolwich Crown Court, where he received his sentence on February 24. His jail term is 30 months for attempted bodily harm and six months for the knife possession, which will run concurrently.
