Alpha Boxing Gym opened in Consett on Monday, February 17. The gym aims to be a community center, owned by Andrew Connor, age 42.

Andrew survived a terrible knife attack and overcame trauma, proving doubters wrong. The gym also launched “Beat the Streets,” a knife amnesty program for young people. They can turn in knives without punishment and get a free week at the gym, a chance to choose a better path. Andrew wants to save lives.

This has been a hard journey for Andrew, who funded it by selling his own stuff. He had brain surgery and must pace himself, and buying special needs equipment is a challenge. He started a fundraiser for community support.

Luke Dyson cut the opening day ribbon, and kids enjoyed sweets and snacks. It was a memorable day for everyone. Andrew’s son, Soul, who has special needs, attended the opening and inspired the gym’s inclusive approach, which offers special sessions for kids like Soul.

The gym’s initiatives focus on inclusivity, believing every child deserves a place to belong. Andrew teaches boxing, offers mentorship, and provides mental health support. He listens and believes in people, something his wife, Katy, did for him, which helped save his life. Alpha Boxing Gym is more than just fitness; it’s a movement he hopes to expand.
