Leisure Centre and Library Closure Plans Face Public Consultation

Hey, listen to this news from Caerphilly. Ten libraries may close soon. Residents have just a week to share their thoughts. The council wants to change how libraries operate.

Three leisure centers could also shut in July. They plan to create fewer, bigger facilities. The council says this improves the service. Money issues impact these decisions, they claim.

You must comment by March 12 in the consultation. People should make their opinions known now. Libraries in several towns are likely to shut down. The council wants “hub” libraries, like Rhymney.

These hubs have more council services available. Bargoed and other towns might get new hubs. New Tredegar Library stays open for three more years. The council thinks hubs will better meet needs.

Some people aren’t thrilled about this change though. Many users disagree with the council plan. Leisure centers in Bedwas and other towns may shut. Reduced leisure sites started as an idea in 2018.

The council wants to save cash. They aim for four “strategic” leisure centers. Financial pressure made them act faster. These closures worry some council members.

They think closures will hurt communities. Residents are also sharing their worries, too. The council needs formal feedback to listen. They ask for everyone to comment by March 12.
