Lidl’s new supermarket in Calne, Wiltshire, is approved after initial objections and revised plans. Construction can now proceed.

The council first approved the supermarket in April 2023. Tesco then objected, claiming errors in planning policy; consequently, the council reversed its approval.
Later in 2023, Lidl submitted new plans. The council has now approved Lidl’s newest Wiltshire store. So, Lidl can now build it.
The approval came with some conditions. A decision notice will detail these expected conditions, although it had not yet been released.
The plans include ten employment units. Car parking and service areas form a key part, and the community strongly supports the new store.
Many community members favored the store. They gave positive comments during the consultation.
Cllr Richard Clewer mentioned the long decision process. It let the council fully consider the scheme and also consider different views. He said the delay helped them consider planning policy and to account for different views, ensuring a thorough review.
