The Lockerbie bombing trial might get delayed. Lawyers on both sides want a postponement. Abu Agila Mas’ud Al-Marimi was due in court May 12, 2025. He is charged with building the bomb that downed Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988.

The US and Mas’ud’s lawyers asked the court to delay it. Mas’ud allegedly built the bomb that killed 259 people on the New York-bound jet. This happened December 21, 1988, and eleven more people died in Lockerbie when wreckage destroyed their homes, a sad event.

It remains Britain’s deadliest terrorist incident. Prosecutors want a delay, citing Mas’ud’s health issues and the case’s complexity. His health might delay the trial by 90-120 days, and they now expect a longer delay, they said.

Lawyers need more time so they must make a pretrial schedule, and then they can set a new trial date later. A hearing might occur the week of March 10, but the judge has to approve the delay.

Mas’ud denies the charges, which involve aircraft and vehicle destruction. These actions resulted in deaths, officials stated, and he could face life in prison.

US officials arrested Mas’ud in 2022 reports say he worked for Muammar Gaddafi. He was charged in 2020 by Attorney General William Barr, as he was the third person involved.

Part of the plane moved to the US for Mas’ud’s trial last year. Dorothy Bain KC commented on this matter, noting Scotland’s firm commitment to punish everyone responsible.

The Pan Am 103 bombing was horrific, the deadliest terrorist attack in the UK, and Scotland’s largest homicide case, concerning its scale and complexity. There were 243 passengers and 16 crew members killed in addition to 11 Lockerbie residents also perished. Victims came from 21 different countries, officials reported.

Laura Buchan leads the prosecution team who are sharing evidence with the US. The process involves the US Department of Justice. Physical evidence is moving from Scotland to the US, including parts of the plane fuselage. The fuselage is part of the criminal inquiry, and families of victims know about this plan.
