Grant Eaton, age 41, got an order last year. It told him to not harass someone. He sent a text message anyway. His lawyer said it didn’t hurt anyone.

Eaton was in court in Colchester on Monday. He admitted he broke the order. He also got a new sentence for stealing things.

The court learned Eaton could not do unpaid work. He had waited in jail for six months. This was for a separate, unrelated crime.

The court changed his sentence for stealing meat. He stole £750 of meat from Marks and Spencer. Now, he must serve six weeks in jail, replacing 50 hours of unpaid work.

Martin Stuchfield spoke to Eaton from HMP Chelmsford. “The shop theft involved expensive items,” he said. “We will give you jail time.”

“The sentence will be nine weeks,” Stuchfield said. “But it’s now six weeks since you pleaded guilty.” This replaced the community service that Eaton didn’t originally do.

The court found that the sentence ends soon. It ends before his current jail time is done.

Karamvir Dhanda spoke about the order breach. Eaton accepted the offense, Dhanda said. He used his jail time productively. “He admits what he did,” Dhanda stated. “He cleaned the prison halls while waiting. Also, he found religion there.”

Dhanda discussed Eaton’s text to his ex-partner. “He said he started a company,” Dhanda explained. “He asked for her details. He wanted to send their son £50 weekly.” “Nothing suggests the text harmed her,” Dhanda added. “It didn’t distress her either.”

Stuchfield spoke about the text message. “The text related to a child,” he noted. “But it was still a serious breach. We will impose two weeks in jail. The sentences will run one after the other.” Stuchfield said the total sentence is eight weeks. Eaton will start serving that now.

Eaton lives on Maldon High Street. The court also gave him a one-year restraining order.
