The Malton Museum shared its future plans recently. They held a meeting last Saturday for the public. The museum wants to move to a new location. The old Golden Fleece pub is their top choice because it’s in Malton’s market place.

The new site will allow the museum to grow and show more items and attract tourists. Supporters and locals loved the proposed designs, which were presented at St Michael’s Church, and shared ideas for the museum’s look.

Architect Tom Brooksbank created the sketch designs, explaining that the design uses local history and aims to create a bold civic building. Traditional and modern elements mix well, featuring stone and windows, with an arch recalling the Roman fort.

The front of the building is historic and will be carefully preserved, according to Tom. It includes a fireplace and stonework. The Fleece was an inn since 1823, but the rear isn’t listed, offering new space where they can create display areas, and even workspaces for local businesses.

The Malton Museum opened in 1935 and was originally named Roman Malton Museum. Digs at Malton Fort led to its creation, and the museum displays finds from those digs. Over time, the collections have grown larger, leading to a move to Subscription Rooms in 2012.

Phil Crabtree stated that relocation would cost about £4 million, requiring fundraisers to get funding. He added that the pub was once a vital hub and the museum will get more space there. It also offers better storage on the site, including disabled access. Cost and location were key factors, and the museum hopes that more exhibits can be lent.
