Kieran Mullen was in court again recently. He admitted to a scary attack. After police asked for help, he turned himself in.

The 30-year-old man is from Dalmellington. He admitted to attacking a woman who was walking home from a work party under John Street in Ayr on January 30, 2023.

The court delayed his punishment to give him time to get money for the woman’s compensation. Mullen admitted he chased the woman then grabbed her. He covered her mouth with his hand and tried pulling her, but she managed to escape.

The court heard that Mullen contacted the police after they asked for information. He was then charged with the crime. A court official said the woman was 18, and she and Mullen did not know each other.

She was out with coworkers in Prestwick at a bar named Harley’s. She left the bar alone at closing time and walked into the underpass, unaware someone followed her.

The official said Mullen grabbed her from behind as she entered, covering her mouth. The court was told she got away, and Mullen fled in the way he came. The official added that she went to police afterward, and they asked for help in March.

Mullen called them and admitted it was him, leading to his arrest. He was told the charges, but said nothing. His lawyer said he understands the crime’s seriousness and that Mullen has no prior convictions, and he saw the police request on social media.

The judge said she must think of public safety, wondering if Mullen truly didn’t remember. His lawyer said he had issues with drugs and alcohol, which made him not remember. The lawyer said he has a job, always showed up to the office, and is facing up to what he did.

Mullen knows he could go to jail, but his lawyer said Mullen has been honest. The judge said jail is a strong possibility; if not, a steep community order is likely. She gave him time to think about his money.

Mullen will return to court another day to learn his sentence. He lives on Hopes Avenue in Dalmellington.
