A jury acquitted a man accused of attacking his mother in her Hove home. He claimed self-defense during turmoil.

The jury heard Neill got out of prison prior. Neill, previously of Brighton’s Warren Road, denied any assault and claimed he was defending himself from someone else in his mother’s flat.
Andrew Stephens defended Neill, admitting Neill hit his mom. But Stephens called it an accident and said Neill tried to block another man. Stephens described “turmoil” during the event and stated Neill acted in lawful self-defense.
The incident happened last January. Someone heard the fight and contacted the police. Hearnden argued Neill punched his mom on purpose, saying it wasn’t an accident or self-defense.
Hearnden stated she was cross with Neill, who in turn, felt annoyed with his mother as well. The court acquitted Neill on February 11th after a two-day trial at Hove Crown Court, overseen by Recorder Amy Packham.
