Kevin Cleverley stole a roast chicken from Waitrose in Marlborough, claiming hunger prompted the theft.

The prosecutor, Mr. Cooper, spoke in court. Cleverley has a long shoplifting record and has 136 convictions for 387 crimes.
Back in November, he stole alcohol worth £1,439. This included champagne and whiskey. He took champagne from Waitrose, and the whiskey came from a different store.
More recently, on February 5, he stole again. This time, he took a roast chicken costing £7.20 at Waitrose in Marlborough.
Mr. Glendenning, Cleverley’s lawyer, said Cleverley is now drug-free. He stole to fund his past drug habit, but now he stole out of hunger, to eat.
Cleverley got a suspended sentence before for stealing aftershave from House of Fraser in Bristol. The theft was worth £250, and the sentence was suspended October 24, 2024, for twelve months.
The judge chose not to jail him. Instead, Cleverley has to do rehabilitation and will work with probation for five days due to breaking his earlier sentence.
He must pay a fine of £20 and a £50 surcharge. The judge did not make him pay for the chicken though.
