Mawney Road closure in Romford for zebra crossing sparks “chaos”. Diversions and bus route changes until March 7.

They are building a zebra crossing, and the project includes safety upgrades. Textured paving and Belisha beacons are being added. Work happens between 8 AM and 5 PM daily. Residents are already saying it’s chaotic.
One person said Mawney Road is chaos, and their trip took thirty minutes, traveling from Linden Street to Eastern Avenue. Another person mentioned jammed side roads that people use as detours. Mawney Road residents find it awful.
The detour goes via St Edwards Way, North Street, and Eastern Avenue West. It also utilizes Whalebone Lane North and London Road. Buses 252 and 651 face diversions too, changing routes until March 7.
Buses go via St Edwards Way, the North Street Roundabout, and Eastern Avenue. Bus stops from Olive Street to Oak Street towards Collier Row, and Oak Street to North Street toward Hornchurch, won’t be served.
The zebra crossing aims to improve safety. Havering Council asked the public about this plan during the consultation in October 2024.
The council studied Mawney Road traffic. They found 1,100 vehicles use it hourly, and drivers often reached 50 mph. The council didn’t state when the study occurred or how long it lasted.
