A memorial service at Culdrose honored Andy Burry, a former Royal Navy aircrewman, with a stone unveiling and trophy presentation.

His wife and daughter honored him at the service. The Royal Navy flag flew low as they unveiled a memorial stone. They also presented a trophy at the air station.
The new award is for Merlin Helicopter Force aircrew. They must show excellence in submarine defense and uphold Navy values. The Naval Flying Standards Flight chooses the recipient every year.
His wife, Charlotte, who also came from Teignmouth, described the day in Cornwall as emotional. She said the trophy would keep his memory alive, noting he had inspired and mentored many people.
Charlotte said she admired him greatly because he could connect with anyone. He made them feel good, as if everyone felt like his best friend and that they were special to him.
Phil Thompson organized the event, having served with Andy Burry. Phil, who now works for Ascent Flight Training which sponsored the trophy, described Andy as fantastic.
Phil and Andy worked at Culdrose and were great friends during their careers. They stayed friends after leaving the Navy. The large turnout showed his popularity and Phil felt honored to call him a friend.
Diccon Griffith, an aircrewman with Naval Flying Standards Flight, currently holds Andy Burry’s former role. Diccon said they owe Andy a great debt because his professionalism and dedication stood out.
Andy’s influence extended beyond personal connections, and his leadership shaped many careers, especially at Culdrose. Diccon read a letter at the ceremony to highlight this fact.
Rear Admiral Anthony Rimington and Tim James wrote the letter. They said Andy’s career left a mark because he served for over 30 years. He showed commitment to submarine defense as a squadron warrant officer and at the Rotary Wing Test Squadron.
Andy’s daughter Jen and her family attended, along with former and current Navy staff. The service happened in Culdrose’s memorial garden. Attendees then shared stories at the mess and remembered their friend together.
