Last year, on February 7, PC Prince Mawrie responded to a call involving some criminal damage. Mawrie pushed someone, using both hands on their chest, causing the person to fall down.

A senior officer believes Mawrie got angry and used too much force in a stressful situation. Mawrie, who is 35, faced charges of common assault related to this event. He said he did not commit the assault.

A court trial took place in December at City of London Magistrates’ Court, and the court found him guilty. The court sentenced him on January 17 to four months in jail, suspended for a year.

The court also ordered Mawrie to pay £1,129, complete 100 hours of work, and undergo 15 days of rehab. A hearing took place last Thursday where an assistant commissioner spoke.

The commissioner stated that police cannot break the law or use excessive force, as this hurts public trust and damages confidence in the police. Policing is hard, and officers can face hostile situations; however, this does not excuse Mawrie’s actions.

He lost his temper for a moment, and the officer again noted the tense environment. Mawrie already quit the police, but he would have been fired without any notice. He will go on a police barred list managed by the College of Policing.
