The Glowsticks Project is opening a new café in Middlesbrough town center. You can find it at Unit 13, Dundas Shopping Centre, the former location of the Orchard Café.

The grand opening is on Monday, March 10th, starting at 11:30 in the morning. The Glowsticks Project is a registered charity that began working last April.

Their mission is to help neurodiverse young people by providing real employment opportunities. The café will offer barista positions and complete training in areas like food hygiene, health and safety, first aid, and manual handling.

Eighty-five percent of the staff have autism, and many volunteers have learning disabilities. Beyond jobs, they offer a sensory room and an ice cream bar. These spaces aim to be welcoming and judgment-free, making kids and youth feel at ease.

The hub will provide a variety of activities, including art therapy, music therapy, arts and crafts, and cookery lessons for everyone, as well as adult autism socials.

They’ll also host male ADHD support groups, and a special EYFS group will be led by experts. Glowsticks Project founder Rebecca Ibbotson, who has autism and ADHD herself, knows this service is essential.

Seventy percent of the trustees are neurodiverse as well. The opening event will include snacks, and there will be tours of the facility, including the sensory room. Meet the staff and young people, many of whom are excited to share their stories.
