Midlothian councillors may raise council tax. A ten percent increase could pass next week. Budget papers already support this plan. The group suggests more tax hikes later, proposing 9% next year, then 8%.

The council meets Tuesday to vote, determining if Band D council tax could reach £1,666.20. That’s up from the current £1,514.73.
East Lothian already approved a 10% rise, becoming the first in Scotland to do so.

Midlothian faced a big budget issue where a 5% tax rise left a £10 million gap. A 10% rise would shrink it to £4 million. The council says tax is the only option to avoid big service cuts.

Reserves will cover the remaining gap after service cuts and new fees. New charges are also planned for approval, including contractors paying for traffic light services.

The council seeks to boost its income by adding fees for pest control, including bedbugs and cockroaches. Animal boarding fees will also increase, and a one stop shop pilot is planned to open at Gorebridge leisure center.

The hub will host the library and meeting rooms. They plan a parking service called Ringo, and Vogrie Park may offer commercial options. Out of school care may be available year-round. Savings plans are still developing; the council will share more details later.
