Council considers millions for Ribblesdale Pool and Clitheroe Castle improvements, with a decision expected in March.

The council aims to allocate funds to various projects. This includes a potential £3 million investment in Ribblesdale Pool, and £1.2 million for Clitheroe Castle. A Longridge sports pitch may receive £1.25 million.
Adam Allen, who directs community services for the council, noted Ribblesdale Pool’s age and the uncertainty surrounding its future. He stated they are aiming for another 15 years of use. Surveys suggest repairs would cost around £1 million.
Refurbishment became the primary focus rather than new construction. A survey estimates around £3 million is needed, encompassing equipment, filtration, and boilers, and potentially addressing electrics and windows.
The pool tank presents a potential risk of leaks. Inspectors report no current leaks or bulges. They are considering a survey of hidden pipes. A steel pool tank would add £1.2 million to the cost. The roof appears to be in good condition.
Roof work, heating, and energy upgrades are being considered, which could amount to £1.9 million if implemented. Council leader Stephen Atkinson advocated for committee involvement, suggesting the Community Services Committee review the pool details.
Deputy leader Simon Hore proposed adding funds, specifically £500,000 for affordable housing and the market. The council also reviewed spending from other funds, including a Jubilee Fund and Shared Prosperity Fund.
Councilors are aware of potential changes to councils as the government aims for new unitary structures. Labour leader Michael Graveston expressed concern about the pool, fearing a new council might close a faulty pool.
Graveston urged consideration of additional pool funding, emphasizing he does not wish to reduce castle funds. Atkinson believes the council must address the castle now, arguing it will be neglected otherwise. Discussing the pool should occur within the relevant committee.
Green councilor Malcom Peplow championed renewable energy, highlighting its potential to reduce future energy costs. He warned that minimal upgrades could still lead to the pool’s closure. He advocated for full investment in the pool to ensure its long-term viability.
