Minehead council may acquire green spaces, car parks, and cafés from Somerset to save local residents money.

Somerset is trying to save money as they are facing possible bankruptcy, so this plan shifts costs to the town. The town council has discussed this for about eighteen months.
The transfer of assets could happen April first, and Minehead included the cost in its budget, covering the year 2025-2026. Councillors must approve some extra spending, near one hundred twenty-three thousand pounds.
The money covers new staff, equipment, and a seven-day work schedule, changes that will improve service. Maintenance standards may also get better, and open space management should be easier too.
Jubilee Gardens Cafe will change owners on April first. Rewilding will be part of the new plans, and residents will hear about service updates communicated regularly.
Currently, both councils work on grounds, causing issues and confusion for people. Before, the town council did some extra work, taking over Blenheim Gardens bedding when Somerset struggled.
This deal includes some key places like Blenheim Gardens with its gardens, café, and parking, and the Alexandra Road car park, which the town council will own starting April.
Parks Walk, Woodcombe Walk, and Bratton Park are also part of the deal. Jubilee Gardens and its café are transferring, and many open spaces go to the town, including the Alexandra Road car park.
These spaces vary in size and type; for instance, there is Millbridge Gardens and Cuckoo Meadow play area. The Esplanade has a partial leasehold transfer because of landowners involved.
The town will maintain Webbers Garden and the Zig Zag path, but Somerset will still own some things. They will handle big repairs and tree work, while the town handles the everyday upkeep.
The town’s work keeps the town clean and well-maintained, hopefully keeping up the old operation standards. Car parks and cafes, alongside parking enforcement, could make money for the town.
