Moray Council saves libraries from closure. Some may move to schools, buildings could be sold. Hours to stay consistent.

Money from building sales will help libraries. Library hours will not decrease now. Staff will check opening times at all eleven libraries. They want to ensure hours meet local community needs, to keep hours consistent with usage. Proposed changes will be reported in August.
People protested potential closures before the meeting. They oppose all library closures and cutbacks. The council said seven libraries risked closure in November because they needed to save money. A survey got 2219 replies about library closures.
Two-thirds of people use libraries monthly. Most people borrow and read books there. Almost half use computers, printers, or Wi-Fi. Events and activities attract nearly forty percent.
The council values public input, said Kathleen Robertson. They listen to residents’ opinions. Libraries need changes for the future to make the service sustainable. The council reached an agreement about the libraries and hopes residents help develop a sustainable service.
Elgin, Forres, Buckie, and Aberlour libraries are not at risk. They were not included in November’s closure threats.
