A safety cordon around Armagh’s dormant Mall West building sparks curiosity. Repairs, not new builds, are the reason.

It makes you wonder what’s up. Are they finally doing something with that property? The council owns it now, you know. Back in 2020, a big retail plan fell apart. They wanted to build new shops there. That idea involved tearing the old building down.
The project was supposed to begin in 2015, but no shops wanted to rent space. So, everything stalled completely. The Department for Communities owned it back then. The council bought it later, saying they would use it again.
But the building has just sat there, empty. The council gave an update recently. The cordon is for storm damage repairs caused by Storm Éowyn, not for building anything new. Someone asked the council about future plans, wanting to know if they’d use the building soon. We will have to wait for their answer.
