Nairn harbour has problems. A harbour wall needs repair. This wall has been damaged for nearly a year. Big storms in 2023 and 2024 caused the damage. People who use the harbor worry about it.

Besides the wall, other things need fixing as well. The seabed is rising, and the harbor lights don’t work well. Toilets are also lacking at the harbor. Some people think the harbor is being neglected. One person said nothing gets done there.

A bad storm damaged the wall’s north side, but the wall still hasn’t been fixed. He added that a sand bar developed nearby, making getting in and out harder. Many harbor lights have been broken for years. He remembers that a local person once fixed problems quickly. Now, it seems that isn’t allowed anymore. Harbor fees keep going up.

He complained to the council last October, and they agreed about the wall and lights being fixed slowly. The council asked Marine Scotland for permission for work. Getting a permit for dredging could take six months, and clearing storm debris also needs a permit.

The council fixed another collapsed wall back in 2018, and that dredging cost £90,000 in 2018. New lights cost £4,000 and pontoons were £35,000. In 2023 to 2024, fees brought in £62,700. After expenses, there was £49,000. Another person said the harbor needs work.

He mentioned erosion and damaged walls, noting that most lights are not working which makes night trips dangerous. Boats can enter and leave less as the tide falls. The sandbar is growing constantly, and the seabed is too high. Storm debris makes it hard to enter the harbor. A burnt building near the harbor looks bad ever since June 2023 too.

Folks want seaside fun and some depend on the water for their jobs, like fishermen and tour guides. Tourists are important for the area. This helps the Highland area overall.

He mentioned possibly joining local water clubs, which could boost the region. Yet, the harbor’s state gives bad first impressions. The town has potential, but action is needed.

A local councilor will talk to the new harbor master and bring up these worries during the coming Friday. The Highland Council has been asked for their view on the harbor.
