Home Bargains is opening a larger store in Mendalgief Retail Park, Newport, featuring a garden center and cafe. It will create 90 jobs.

The new store is going in Mendalgief Retail Park. It covers 3,000 square meters in Maesglas and will include a garden center and café right inside, making it a nice place to shop.
They built it where the old Lidl used to be, and some shops next to it were removed, including another Home Bargains location. Everything was torn down last May in 2024 to make space for the new discount retailer, allowing them to build bigger.
This project costs around £10 million and should create 90 new jobs. They have already begun the hiring process, which is good news for people needing employment.
The store will have parking for 175 cars and a bike shelter. This sounds convenient for shoppers and cyclists alike and should help with local traffic.
Home Bargains already has one Newport store on Seven Stiles Avenue at Newport Retail Park, so this won’t be their first venture into the area.
The new store aims to give people a better shopping trip through its bigger size. The expansion wants to serve locals well by offering more products and services to choose from.
They started planning this over two years ago and submitted plans at the start of 2023. It’s been a pretty long process for everyone, but now the plan can finally be done.
