Councilors approve youth hub lease but shorten requested term to 35 years from the original 150.

The charity hopes to secure funds from the District Council in May to build the hub. This hub is intended to become the main youth center, replacing the old one that closed in 2017 after being sold by Hampshire County Council. The town clerk mentioned that the lease is still under discussion. Lawyers believe 150 years is too long, suggesting an initial term of 35 years.
A councillor argued that a long lease would aid in securing funding, emphasizing that the council would retain ownership of the land. Another councillor expressed surprise at the request, noting he had never seen such requirements in other funding applications. One councillor deemed 100 years excessive, suggesting 35 to 50 years would be sufficient.
The committee chairman shared his concerns, noting that a long lease could create future issues and exceeds typical leaseholds. Consequently, the committee decided to suggest a 35-year lease, which they will present to the full council. The Youth Trust, established in February 2024, currently provides sessions at Empire Skate café on Wednesdays and Fridays.
They also assist teens outside the café on Tuesdays, collaborating with the police and helping young offenders. The council previously granted them £13,000 in December, marking the third grant awarded and reflecting their satisfaction with the charity’s work.
