New rules starting April 1 aim to simplify recycling, ending local variations for homes and businesses with standardized bins.

The government aims for simpler recycling for everyone, hoping to end the “postcode lottery” where different areas recycle differently. Now, everyone will recycle the same way. These changes should help people, eliminating the need to check local rules. Businesses will also find it simpler, making it easier to stay green.
By March 31, businesses, including schools and hospitals, must get ready with the four bins for recycling. Garden waste has a different rule. However, small businesses with under ten workers get extra time, having until March 2027 to start sorting.
Councils will offer many bin sizes to cater to each business’s specific needs. Waste bins can be 240 or 120 liters, while food waste caddies hold 23 liters.
Keith Kiddie, a local council member, understands businesses are busy and wants to help them follow the rules. The food waste service is simple, allowing businesses to easily manage and properly dispose of their food waste.
