New Retirement Complex Planned for Crewe After Beechmere Fire
A fire destroyed the 132-apartment building in August 2019. It had a timber frame.
Firefighters and neighbors ensured everyone evacuated safely. About 150 elderly and disabled residents lived there.
Cheshire East’s finance group will soon meet to discuss continuing contract talks involving rebuilding Beechmere. They hope to commence construction next spring or summer, with a potential opening in late 2027 or 2028.
Cheshire County Council hired Avantage to design, build, and run these projects. This included all five extra care schemes.
Avantage met with former Beechmere residents to share updates and gather feedback on new designs. Meetings became less frequent over time, but Avantage continues informing residents of important news.
A report outlines a timeline for talks and building, although timings beyond March 2025 are less certain. They aim to agree on key terms this month, by the end of March.
Avantage anticipates obtaining building permission this summer, potentially taking three to six months. Following this, legal deals should conclude by March 2026, allowing construction to begin in spring or summer, with the new building opening in late 2027 or 2028.
Cheshire East manages three of the five schemes: Beechmere, Willowmere, and Oakmere. The others, Hollymere and Hazelmere, are in Cheshire West and Chester.
Cheshire East now manages the contract for both local councils. This arrangement began after a council change in 2009.
The finance group will meet March 10 at 10 a.m. at Macclesfield Town Hall.
